AbstractMapping and monitoring land cover is required to know patterns of land use and identifying the agents of change. This paper uses techniques of digital image processing to map and quantify the following land cover/land use classes: Water, Urban area, Agriculture/Pasture, and Vegetation (primary forest and regrowth areas). The study area covers the municipality of Corumbiara, located at the south region of Rondônia state, Brazil. For this study, we used Landsat 5/TM images acquired in June 2007, which were processed using Linear Spectral Mixture Model, segmentation, supervised classification (Maxver-ICM), and unsupervised classification (Isoseg) techniques. The confusion matrix was used to assessment the accuracy of the classification, by using the Kappa coefficient of agreement. The most significant errors occurred due the allocation of some areas of Agricultural class as belonging to the class Urban area, especially areas of bare soil. The rural activity, such as pasture and farming, and vegetation are the main land cover/land use classes. The hydrography and urban area classes had little representation. The results indicate a trend into the conversion of areas of vegetation in agricultural areas. There is a need of a systematic tracking of the region to map land cover/land use changes, as a mean to monitoring the patterns of change in this region.
